The Township Assessor assesses all homes and determines the Fair Market Value (FMV). The FMV is divided by 3 to determine the Equalized Assessed Value (EAV). The EAV divided by 100, multiplied by the tax rate (either the total rate or taxing body's rate) equals the tax owed.

The City of Genoa's Property Tax Levy is a revenue within the General Fund. The General Fund has 3 main revenues: Sales Tax, Property Tax, and Income Tax. The General Fund supports the operating expenditures of the City (non-capital and non-water and sewer expenditures). On average, the General Fund expenditures are: 52% Police Department, 20% Administration, 20% Street Department, and the remainder split amongst Community Development, non-Departmental, and maintenance and operation of the Municipal Building.
