KVHS Pioneer Day 2017 and 40th Anniversary
Mark your calendars now for our celebration of Pioneer Day in Genoa, hosted by the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society, on Sunday, August 27 from 11-4. Help us welcome back President and Mrs. Lincoln, tour the grounds on a horse-drawn stagecoach, try your hand at shelling corn and creating hand-dipped candles. Enjoy a delicious pork chop dinner provided by the Lions Club of Genoa, topped off by a slice of homemade pie! The Silent Auction will offer unique items that are handcrafted, antique, or of historical significance. Stroll around the grounds to chat with exhibitors, demonstrating their skills of wood-carving, basket-weaving, tatting lace, stitching bean bags on a treadle sewing machine, and creating newsletters with an old-time press. Fox Valley Mixers will perform to a caller, allowing visitors to see a traditional square dance. Step right up, and you may learn a beginning square dance repertoire “on the spot.”
We will recognize our original founders as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Museum and take a moment to pay tribute to Roger Watson, who was a founder of Pioneer Day. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to view the exhibits, focused on how pioneers gathered, prepared, and preserved their food; clothing they wore for daily chores as well as for special occasions; a Thompson piano from the early 1900s, a standing musical harp, a Westrola hand-cranked record player for leisure activities; and an extensive collection of HO model trains. Step into the caboose after witnessing an 1800s gunfight, and you can see what it was like to be a trainman, enjoying the “comforts” of rail travel way back when. In the Waterworks Building you’ll find an old time hearse, an Overland car, doctor’s office, and laundry room. You can see the Genoa Fire Department proudly displaying a 1937 Genoa Fire Engine on the Heritage Society lawn. Other local entities, like our Genoa Public Library, will present information about their own unique history.
Visit the Museum any Wednesday from 1—5 or from 2 to 4 on the second Sunday of each month. You can visit at 622 Park Avenue, Genoa, find us on Facebook, or click on https://sites.google.com/site/kvhsgenoail/home.
