The City has been awarded $250,000 in grant funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to develop sidewalks aimed at improving safety for children traveling to school. To carry out this project, the City has hired CES Engineering to handle the sidewalk design.
The City of Genoa Public Works Department operates a Class 2 Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) that processes wastewater from residential, industrial, and commercial sources, including from the Village of Kingston. The facility must comply with water quality standards set by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit, established under the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) oversees NPDES permits and sets discharge standards based on the health of receiving waterways and other regulations. Recently, the City submitted a renewal for its NPDES permit and received reduced discharge limits for total chlorine. This is part of a broader trend where municipal wastewater facilities face more stringent chlorine discharge limits.
To comply with these new requirements, the City negotiated a 27-month compliance schedule to adjust its processes. The City has partnered with EEI Engineering to complete the necessary design engineering services to ensure the facility meets the updated standards and remains in compliance with environmental regulations.
