Streets Division

The Street Division is responsible for a wide range of tasks related to maintaining and improving the City's public infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:

  • Street and Alley Maintenance: Overseeing repairs and upkeep of streets, alleys, sidewalks, and parkway trees.
  • Stormwater Infrastructure: Maintaining storm sewers, detention basins, and the stormwater collection system.
  • Traffic Control: Managing traffic signals, signage, and road markings.
  • Downtown and Public Spaces: Maintaining downtown street lighting, banners, public spaces, and the pedestrian bridge.
  • Seasonal Operations: Performing snow removal, ice control, and street sweeping, primarily during warmer months to reduce flooding.
  • Landscaping and Grounds: Handling tree trimming, brush pickup, weed control, grounds restoration, and mowing.

The division maintains 26 center lane miles of roads, with street and stormwater maintenance carried out year-round. Street sweeping helps clear debris from curb inlets, reducing surface flooding during heavy rain.

Street sweeping occurs March through November. City staff sweeps the streets every 3 weeks.

Shovel as much of the snow from your driveway as possible to the right side, if you're looking out toward the street. snow on the left side could be pushed back into the driveway by the snow plows.

City staff arrive on site 30 minutes before any snow and ice control event that has expected snow accumulation. Staff also pre-salt prior to snow and ice control events to help the roads from becoming slick.

The City maintains the streetlights along Main Street between Washington & Sycamore Street. All other street lights are owned by ComEd and should be to ComEd at 1-800-344-1661 or 1-800-eddison1. You can also report the light outage through ComEds web portal https://comed.streetlightoutages.com/public/default.html.
