In 2024, the City of Genoa conducted a comprehensive sidewalk assessment to identify and address pedestrian safety concerns. As a result of this evaluation, 448 trip hazards were identified throughout the city.
To proactively improve walkability and reduce the risk of injuries, the City has developed a 5-Year Trip Hazard Removal Program. This program prioritizes repairs based on severity, pedestrian traffic volume, and geographic distribution to ensure a fair and efficient process.
What is a Trip Hazard?
A sidewalk trip hazard is typically defined as a vertical displacement of ¾ inch or more between concrete panels, creating a walking hazard for pedestrians. These hazards are usually caused by ground settling, tree root growth, or aging infrastructure.
What to Expect
Each year, designated neighborhoods will be addressed based on the schedule developed from the assessment data. Remediation techniques may include grinding, panel replacement, or other ADA-compliant solutions.
